Years ago, my son and I were standing in the Texas DMV waiting in line for him to get his learner's permit to drive. They handed him a paper to read and sign that had the heading "Zero Tolerance" and it was about driving while under the influence. He began reading it and as he did, he was appalled because the title and the commitment that they were asking him to sign with the consequences were in such stark contrast. The "Zero Tolerance" was something like if you got caught driving while under the influence under the age of 18, you would have to attend an educational program similar to drug counseling or AA, might lose your license for up to 2 years, and have to pay a fine. This is where the discussion started and he told me that if they were going to call it "Zero Tolerance", then if you got caught driving under the influence, why wouldn't they just take your license away until you were 18 instead of giving you all these other minor consequences and still let you drive. He stated that is not zero tolerance. Hence, "Obscured Reality" was born. We had many discussions about the many ways our society contradicts what we say and do versus what we expect from people, especially our youth. So, feel free to join our journey as we proceed.
